Bridport's origins date back to the 9th century, it is a market town and for centuries rope and net making dominated the industry. Nowadays there are many diverse small industries but tourism dominates. The built up area of Bridport has approximately 12,000 residents many of them retired.

West Bay, one mile to the south of Bridport is a fishing port and the harbour which has been featured on television programmes is a tourist attraction.

Beaminster lies six miles to the north of Bridport and Lyme Regis nine miles to the west of the town. Beaminster is mainly a farming community and Lyme Regis with its harbour and famous 'Cobb' a fishing and tourism community.
